Read before using these numbers

South Dakota pays more for technician-delivered therapy than almost any other state, and the figure is not a transcription error. We confirmed $21.73 for 97153 by querying the state's own published dataset directly, and the printed description on that same row reads 'Each 15 Minutes', so the unit is stated rather than assumed.
The state does not publish this schedule as a document. Unlike its other fee schedules, the ABA schedule exists only as an interactive report, so a reader has to open the fee schedules page and select Applied Behavior Analysis under Other Services rather than download a file.
These are maximum allowable amounts, not guaranteed payments. The schedule states that providers must bill their usual and customary charge and that the listed fee is the maximum a provider may be reimbursed; the billing manual repeats that payment is the lesser of the two.
0362T and 0373T are not on the schedule. South Dakota Medicaid's own procedure code look-up marks both as not covered with no fee.
The fourth column on the schedule is headed 'Rate Updated Date', not the schedule's effective date. The effective date comes from a separate field on the report face reading 'Effective July 1, 2026'. Per-code update dates are 1 July 2026 for seven codes and 1 July 2025 for 97156.
Coverage conditions from the December 2025 billing manual: ABA is an EPSDT benefit for recipients aged 20 or younger with an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis, prior authorization is required in six-month periods, and services must be ordered by a physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant. BCaBAs and RBTs cannot enroll directly; their work is billed under the supervising behavior analyst and limited to the technician codes.
The schedule instructs providers to append applicable modifiers, which can alter final payment. The figures above are the unmodified base amounts.
South Dakota Medicaid is predominantly fee-for-service, so unlike many states these are the rates most providers are actually paid.
