What Changes for BCBAs and RBTs in 2027
The BACB's 2027 requirements change degree, coursework, fieldwork and CE rules for BCBA and BCaBA applicants on January 1, 2027, and pathways 3 and 4 disappear. Every change here is sourced to the BACB document that states it.
The most expensive thing to misunderstand about the 2027 changes is what triggers them. It is not when you enrolled, when you started fieldwork, or when you finished coursework. It is the date you submit your certification application.
The BACB’s transition guidance for BCBA applicants states it plainly: “if you do not apply and meet the current requirements before January 1, 2027, you must meet the new requirements that take effect on that date.” A trainee who started a master’s program in 2025 and applies in February 2027 is held to the 2027 rules in full.

Who is affected, and who is not
The January 1, 2027 changes apply to BCBA and BCaBA applicants and certificants. The Recent & Upcoming Changes table describes them as “Revisions to core certification requirements, including degree, coursework, supervised fieldwork, continuing education, and ongoing supervision. Pathways 3 and 4 discontinued.”
RBTs are not part of the 2027 change. The RBT overhaul already happened — it took effect January 1, 2026 — and its consequences land during 2027 and 2028. That section is at the bottom of this page.
Existing BCBAs and BCaBAs are not re-credentialed. What reaches them is the maintenance side: continuing education, which changes for BCBAs.
Eligibility pathways: four become two
Under the current BCBA Handbook, there are four BCBA pathways. Pathway 3 requires “at least three cumulative years of full-time work in behavior analysis as a faculty member.” Pathway 4 requires a doctoral degree “conferred at least 10 years ago” plus 10 years of postdoctoral practical experience and 500 fieldwork hours.
Both are gone on January 1, 2027. The transition guidance is direct: “If you want to apply under pathway 3 or 4, you must do so — and meet all requirements — before January 1, 2027.”

The transition document confirms: “There are no changes to the degree requirements for pathway 1.”
Pathway 2 itself has a scheduled end date. The Recent & Upcoming Changes table lists January 1, 2032, when “Pathway 1 … will be the only eligibility pathway for BCBA certification.”
The one-calendar-year rule, added in February 2026
This is the newest change and the one least likely to be reflected in older advice.
The February 2026 BACB Newsletter reports that beginning in 2024 the BACB observed applicants completing degrees extremely quickly: “12 applicants from one university completed their full master’s degree in a single academic quarter. At another university, 47 students completed their full master’s degree in three months or less, including a few who finished their degree in just over one month.”
An 11-member subject matter expert committee met in November 2025, and the Board approved two additions effective January 1, 2027. For pathway 2, both the degree and the entirety of the coursework may not be completed in less than one calendar year — defined as “three consecutive primary semesters … four consecutive primary quarters … or 12 consecutive months under another model.”
The newsletter also notes the context: ABAI is discontinuing the Verified Course Sequence system, and pathway 2 ends in 2032, so the BACB characterizes this as a time-limited problem.
Coursework: same total, different shape
Pathway 2 still requires 315 hours for BCBA. What changes is how those hours must be packaged. The transition guidance publishes this conversion table:

The practical traps the BACB flags: Basic Principles and Theory & Philosophy must each be a standalone course; Behavior Assessment & Intervention must span two freestanding courses; OBM rises from 30 to 45 hours in a freestanding course; and Ethics “can no longer be broken up across multiple courses.”
Content descriptions changed too. Per the March 2025 Newsletter, the Behavior Assessment and Intervention and OBM areas must now address “the identification and integration of client-specific cultural, contextual, and personal variables.” That newsletter also records that “the requirements no longer include the integration of DEI into any of the course-content areas.”
BCaBA pathway 2 coursework rises from 225 to 270 hours, per the BCaBA transition document.

For BCaBA, Concentrated fieldwork drops from 1,000 hours to 800, with supervision staying at 10%.
The asymmetry matters if you are accruing hours now. The BACB spells it out: hours accrued at 7.5% supervision “cannot be counted as concentrated fieldwork under the 2022 requirements,” but 2022 hours at 10% do satisfy the 2027 threshold. Similarly, 130-hour months always work; 160-hour months only work under 2027 rules. The BACB’s advice is to complete both the 2022 and 2027 Monthly Fieldwork Verification Forms each month, track observations by both count and duration, and keep all documentation for at least seven years.

The planned DEI CEU category was removed. Instead, the Ethics CEU definition expands to cover “events related to cultural/contextual responsiveness,” with the qualifier that “most of the event must focus on ethics or cultural/contextual responsiveness.”
What is not changing
The exam. The transition guidance states that since January 1, 2025 the BCBA exam has been based on the Test Content Outline (6th ed.), and “there are no upcoming changes to the BCBA examination or the Test Content Outline.” Going forward, the BACB says exam updates will occur independently of requirement changes.
RBTs: the 2026 changes, and what happens in 2027
The RBT rules changed on January 1, 2026. Per the RBT 2026 transition guidance, new applicants need a 40-hour training aligned to the 2026 curriculum outline, with a certificate that states it “is designed to meet the 2026 training eligibility requirement,” plus the updated Initial Competency Assessment. Trainers must be active BCBAs or BCaBAs who completed an 8-hour supervision training. There is no bridge course: “You will need to complete the full training again.”
The noncertified RBT Supervisor role was eliminated the same day; supervisors must hold BCaBA or BCBA certification.
The recertification timeline runs like this. RBTs recertified in 2026 with a competency assessment and moved to a 2-year cycle. In 2027, those RBTs do not recertify at all — instead a tab appears in the BACB account for uploading professional development units. In 2028, they submit a recertification application with 12 PDUs completed and no competency assessment. Per the RBT Handbook, PDUs come from employer in-service training, ACE provider events, or university coursework, and cannot overlap with ongoing RBT supervision. Missed PDUs cannot be made up after the recertification date.
The short version
If you are a BCBA or BCaBA trainee who might apply near the boundary, plan to satisfy both rule sets and keep two sets of fieldwork forms. If you were counting on pathway 3 or 4, you have until December 31, 2026. If you are an RBT, your next real deadline is a PDU count, not a competency assessment.

Starting a program in 2025 does not protect you if you apply in 2027.
What are the new RBT requirements for 2026?
The RBT changes took effect January 1, 2026, not 2027. They cover an updated 40-hour training with a new required approval statement on the certificate, an updated RBT Initial Competency Assessment, a move from a 1-year to a 2-year recertification cycle, and 12 hours of professional development units per 2-year cycle. RBT supervisors must now hold BCaBA or BCBA certification.
What are the BCBA fieldwork requirements in 2026 versus 2027?
Total hours do not change — 2,000 Supervised or 1,500 Concentrated. What changes on January 1, 2027 is that Concentrated fieldwork supervision drops from 10% to 7.5%, the monthly accrual cap rises from 130 to 160 hours, and client observations shift from one contact per month to 60 cumulative minutes per month (Supervised) or 90 minutes (Concentrated).
Is the BCBA exam changing in 2027?
