How long does it take to become an RBT?

The BACB sets a floor and a ceiling on the training, not on the whole process: the 40-hour training must be completed in no fewer than 5 days and no more than 180 days. After that, you complete an initial competency assessment, submit the application, and allow two weeks for the BACB to process it. A motivated applicant with an employer already lined up can realistically finish in four to eight weeks; the process stalls most often on finding a certificant to do the attestation and the competency assessment.

How much does RBT certification cost?

The BACB fees are $65 for the 2026 certification application processing fee and $45 for the Pearson VUE examination appointment, so $110 total to certify, per the RBT Handbook updated June 2026. Recertification is $50 for the two-year cycle beginning January 1, 2026. The 40-hour training is a separate cost set by whoever provides it — the BACB does not set that price or provide the training.

Do you need a degree to be an RBT?

No. The BACB requires at least a high school-level education or the equivalent when you apply, and that you be at least 18 years old when you submit the application. No college degree, no prior experience in behavior analysis, and no license is required. You do need to pass a criminal background check and an abuse registry check.

Does RBT certification expire?

Yes, and it lapses fast if you miss the date. RBT certification currently expires annually, on roughly the anniversary of the date you passed the exam, and is moving to a two-year cycle beginning in 2027. If you miss your expiration date you get a 30-day reinstatement window with a $50 late fee; miss that, and you must meet the requirements in force at the time, reapply, and retake the exam.

Can an RBT work independently or open a practice?

No. The BACB describes the RBT as a paraprofessional who practices under the direction and close supervision of an RBT Supervisor or RBT Requirements Coordinator, who are responsible for all work the RBT performs. You must receive supervision on at least 5% of your service hours every calendar month, and your certification is inactive — meaning you may not bill, practice, or call yourself an RBT — any time you do not have a qualified supervisor on record with the BACB.

What happens if you fail the RBT exam?

You may retake it up to 8 total attempts within the 12-month period following your initial application approval, and there is currently no fee to submit a retake application. You must wait 7 days between attempts, and you pay Pearson VUE's $45 appointment fee each time you sit. If you use all 8 attempts without passing, you must wait out the 12-month authorization period before reapplying.

RBT Certification: Requirements, Cost and Timeline (2026)

What it actually takes to become a Registered Behavior Technician: the BACB's exact eligibility requirements, the $110 in fees, the 2026 rule changes, the exam, and how recertification works. Sourced entirely to BACB documents, with dates.

The Registered Behavior Technician credential is the entry point into ABA therapy. It requires no degree, costs $110 in board fees, and can be finished in about a month. It is also one of the most heavily marketed credentials in health care, and most of what ranks for it is a training company selling a course. This page sells nothing. Every requirement, fee and deadline below is linked to the Behavior Analyst Certification Board document that states it, with the date that document was published.

What the credential is, and what it is not

The BACB defines the role narrowly. Per the RBT Handbook, updated June 2026, the RBT “is a paraprofessional certified in behavior analysis. RBTs assist in delivering behavior-analytic services and practice under the direction and close supervision of an RBT Supervisor and/or an RBT Requirements Coordinator, who are responsible for all work RBTs perform.”

Read that again if you are considering the credential as a career move. An RBT does not design treatment plans, does not independently conduct assessments, and cannot practice without a supervisor on record. The handbook is blunt about the sequence, too: RBT certification “was originally designed for settings in which a BCBA or BCaBA is already providing behavior-analytic services. Thus, applying to become an RBT is most likely to occur after the applicant has been employed by the organization in which they will continue their work.”

That is the most useful thing to know before you pay for anything. In practice you find the employer first and certify second, because two required steps — the attestation and the initial competency assessment — must be completed by a BACB certificant who is not related to you, not your subordinate, and not your employee.

The requirements

All of the following must be met before you apply, per the Eligibility Requirements section of the RBT Handbook (updated June 2026).

Two details in the training document are worth knowing before you buy a course. The training must be designed and overseen by a BCaBA, BCBA or BCBA-D who has completed the 8-hour supervision training, and assigned readings may not count toward the 40 hours. The curriculum allocates 38 hours across eight sections — 20 of them to behavior-change interventions and 5 to ethics — with 2 unallocated hours that a trainer can add anywhere.

We do not recommend a training provider, and neither does the board. The handbook states plainly: “The BACB does not provide 40-hour training, certificates of completion, or training program recommendations.” What it does require is that the certificate carry the statement “This training program is designed to meet the 2026 training eligibility requirement for RBT certification.” Ask for that sentence in writing before you pay. A course built to the pre-2026 outline will not support an application filed now.

What changed on January 1, 2026

This is the part most pages have not caught up with. The BACB’s Recent and Upcoming Changes page lists four RBT changes effective January 1, 2026:

Revisions to core RBT eligibility and maintenance requirements, including training, competency assessments, and professional development. Recertification cycles change from 1 year to 2 years.
The noncertified RBT Supervisor role was eliminated. RBT Supervisors must now hold BCaBA or BCBA certification.
The examination is now based on the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.).
Applicants applying on or after January 1, 2026 must have completed a 40-hour training meeting the 2026 curriculum outline.

The BACB’s guidance on the 2026 transition covers the edge cases, including what happens to training completed under the old outline. There is no bridge course. If your training was not built to the 2026 requirements, you retake it.

The handbook also notes that candidates test under whichever edition of the test content outline is in effect when they schedule, and that if a new edition takes effect mid-authorization, they must test under the new one. Exceptions are not granted.

The cost

Every figure below is from the fee tables in the RBT Handbook, updated June 2026.

BACB fees are nonrefundable and nontransferable, and the board accepts US currency only. Veterans who qualify for the GI Bill can be reimbursed for the examination fee by the Department of Veterans Affairs regardless of whether they pass.

The 40-hour training is not on this list because the BACB does not set its price. Many employers provide it at no cost to new hires — which is another argument for finding the job first.

The timeline

Applications stay active for 90 days. If you have not met every requirement inside that window, you reapply and pay the fee again, which is why the handbook recommends waiting until you are fully eligible before starting one. Allow two weeks for the BACB to process a complete application. Once approved, you have one year to sit for the exam.

The exam

The RBT examination has 75 scored questions and 10 unscored questions, four options each with one correct answer, and a 90-minute limit. It is administered in a computer-based format at Pearson VUE testing centers. Results are pass/fail and delivered at the testing center.

The passing score is set by the modified Angoff method — a panel of BACB-certified subject matter experts, approved by the board — so it is criterion-referenced, not curved against other candidates. The BACB does not endorse study guides, and states that buying preparation materials does not guarantee a pass.

If you fail, a retake application appears in your portal account within 48 hours. You get up to 8 attempts in the 12 months following your initial application approval, with a 7-day wait between them.

After you pass, and what keeps it alive

Passing does not make you an active RBT. The handbook is specific: your certification status begins as inactive, and only becomes active once an RBT Supervisor or RBT Requirements Coordinator adds you as a supervisee. While inactive you may not bill, practice, or represent yourself as an RBT.

Maintenance has three parts:

Supervision. At least 5% of the hours you spend delivering behavior-analytic services each calendar month, with a minimum of two face-to-face, real-time contacts per month. Your supervisor must observe you delivering services in at least one of them. At least one contact must be individual; the other may be a small group of 2 to 10 RBTs.

Recertification. Currently annual, with an expiration date typically on the anniversary of the date you passed the exam. RBTs recertifying on or after January 1, 2026 complete the current requirements — including a Recertification Competency Assessment done no more than 45 days before the expiration date — one final time, after which the two-year cycle begins. Recertification applications become available in your portal 45 days out.

Professional development. For anyone certified or recertified in 2026, 12 professional development units per two-year cycle, first applying at recertification in 2028. PDUs come from employer in-service training, ACE providers, or accredited university coursework. Per the BACB’s in-service training requirements document, independent reading and podcasts do not count, events must run at least 25 minutes to earn 0.5 PDU, and supervision cannot double as professional development.

Miss the expiration date and you have 30 days to reinstate by filing an approvable application plus the $50 late fee. Miss that window and the certification expires: you must meet whatever requirements apply at that time, reapply, and retake the examination.

How many RBTs there are, and who employs them

As of July 1, 2026, the BACB reported 260,174 RBTs and 85,587 BCBAs. Nationally that works out to roughly 3.5 certified technicians per BCBA, but the state-level spread is enormous — from under 1 per BCBA in Maine, New York and Oregon to more than 7 in Oklahoma. (The dashboard’s totals differ slightly from the headline count above; both are the BACB’s own numbers, cut on different dates.)

Certification is not employment, and the state on a BACB record is an address of record rather than a place of practice. Still, the ratio is the closest public proxy for how much supervision capacity sits behind each technician. Most RBTs work for multi-site clinic organizations; the ones carrying a federal provider registration are listed in our ABA company directory.

We do not publish an RBT salary figure here. We could not verify one against a primary source we can link, and a number we cannot source is worth less than no number at all.
