Portia is the clearest example in this directory of software written by the people who had to use it. It was developed inside The Portia Learning Centre, an ABA clinic founded in 2006, by the McArthur family working with the clinic's own behavior analysts.1

That arrangement still holds. Karen McArthur is chief executive of both the software company and the clinic group, which means the product's roadmap is set by someone who also runs a practice on it.2

There is correspondingly little corporate history to report. We found no investors and no change of control, but the search that establishes this is a US securities database, and a Canadian private company would never appear in it. Treat the absence as weak evidence.3

What we could not confirm 4 open questions
  • The founding date of the software business itself is not published; only the clinic's 2006 founding and a 2012 co-ownership date are stated.2
  • Where Portia International is based is not published on any of its own pages — they give a toll-free number and describe a North American support team, nothing more. The clinics are in Ontario, but that locates the clinic group, not the software company.4
  • Which family members beyond Karen McArthur hold ownership, and in what proportions, is not published. Her own biography says only that she is a co-owner.2
  • No scale figures of any kind have been published.1
